Bark is the part of a tree that carries a scheme when nothing is in flower and, on deciduous species, when nothing is in leaf. Lagerstroemia gives the smooth mottled trunks, Melaleuca the papery layered bark, Pandanus the prop roots, and Pinus, Podocarpus, Populus euphratica and Pistacia the coarser textures.
Bark interest is only worth specifying where people get close enough to see it, so it belongs on courtyard and path edges rather than in the middle of open ground.
