Melaleuca and Paperbark Trees
Melaleuca and the closely related Callistemon handle conditions that defeat most other genera: periodic waterlogging, saline ground, coastal wind and poor soil, all while flowering heavily. Melaleuca quinquenervia and Melaleuca trichostachya are the paperbark trees proper, with Melaleuca thymifolia 'White Lace' and the Callistemon viminalis selections at shrub scale.
Melaleuca is one of very few groups that tolerates both drought and inundation, which makes it the default choice for swale, basin and detention planting where water level is unpredictable. See callistemon for the bottlebrush range, Australian native trees for the wider group, and trees with distinctive bark for the paperbark character.
