Wind firmness is a combination of flexible wood, a crown that spills rather than catches, and a root plate that can be established properly. Acacia is the strongest group here, with Tamarix aphylla, Pinus thunbergii, Populus euphratica, Casuarina, Melaleuca, Pandanus and the Waterhousia and Flindersia selections.
Most wind failures on new projects are staking and root plate failures rather than species failures, so the establishment method matters at least as much as the choice. Where the planting is a working shelter belt rather than an exposed specimen, trees for windbreaks is the correct list, and on coastal ground pair it with salt tolerant trees for oceanfront properties.
