A shelter belt has to establish quickly and stay permeable, because a solid barrier creates turbulence on the leeward side instead of shelter. Acacia is the strongest group here, with Pinus, Parkinsonia, Schinus, Tamarix aphylla, Melia azedarach, Albizia lebbeck, Searsia pendulina and Pongamia.
Windbreaks work as a system rather than a row: two or three staggered lines of differing height shelter a far greater distance than a single dense line of the same species. Plan the section, not just the plant list. For exposed individual specimens see wind resistant trees, and on coastal ground add salt tolerant trees for oceanfront properties.
