The inland arid shrub palette as it is written into Saudi schedules, where much of the material is native to the Arabian interior and where the choice is often driven by what will hold ground between widely spaced trees. Acacia, Lawsonia inermis, Artemisia judaica, Thymus decussatus, Achillea fragrantissima, Salvia deserti, Rhanterium epapposum, Retama raetam, Ziziphus and Capparis decidua lead it.
Coastal material is held separately, because a Red Sea frontage turns on salinity rather than aridity. On Saudi work the shrub package is usually the part of a schedule that can be grown to order, because the volumes are high and the lead time is shorter than for advanced trees.
