About this collection

Salt Tolerant Palms

Palms take coastal exposure better than almost any broadleaf tree, and this is the group with a documented salt tolerance. Washingtonia filifera and Washingtonia robusta, Sabal palmetto, Thrinax radiata, Acoelorrhaphe wrightii, Dictyosperma album, Cocos nucifera and Bismarckia nobilis all hold condition in front line positions.

Salt tolerance in palms is largely about the crown shedding spray rather than the roots excluding salinity, so irrigation water quality still needs checking separately on reclaimed ground. For the broadleaf equivalent see salt tolerant trees for coastal areas, and the Middle East coastal palette is the assembled Gulf coastal list.
