About this collection

Ornamental Grasses and Strappy Plants

Grasses and strappy plants supply movement and soft texture where shrubs would read as heavy, and most of them tolerate cutting to the ground once a year, which makes them the easiest layer to maintain. Pennisetum, Lomandra, Dianella, Agapanthus, Liriope, Ophiopogon, Dietes, Hemerocallis and Crinum lead the range, with Zoysia, Sporobolus and Stipagrostis for turf and dune work.

Several ornamental grasses seed freely and are restricted or invasive in some jurisdictions, so check the species against local rules before committing to volume. Sterile selections exist for most of the risky ones. See ground cover plants for the low layer and agapanthus for the most specified strappy genus. Several of the sedges and rushes here also work at the water line, which is where aquatic and marginal plants takes over.
