About this collection
Coastal Landscaping Shrubs
Coastal shrub planting takes the salt that trees above it deflect, so the tolerance has to be genuine rather than inferred from a related species. Syzygium, Callistemon, Westringia, Carissa, Conocarpus, Coccoloba uvifera, Hibiscus, Leptospermum, Pittosporum tobira and Punica granatum all hold condition in exposed seaside positions.
Grey and silver foliage is common in this group and is not a coincidence: the reflective surface and fine hairs that produce the colour are the same features that shed salt. It is a reasonable field indicator. See salt tolerant shrubs for coastal areas for the documented tolerance list and coastal landscaping trees for the layer above.
