Procurement note

Availability is confirmed by project review.

Description

The Schinus molle, or Peruvian Pepper Tree, is a fast-growing evergreen tree native to South America. Known for its graceful, weeping habit, feathery, aromatic foliage, and clusters of pinkish-red, pepper-like berries, it is widely planted as an ornamental tree in warm climates. Reaching up to 10–15 meters, it provides excellent shade and is often used in parks, large gardens, and along streets.

This drought-tolerant tree thrives in arid and semi-arid conditions, making it an ideal choice for water-wise landscapes, though it can be invasive in some regions.

Specifications:

  • Height: 10–15 meters
  • Width: 10–12 meters
  • Native to: South America (Peru, Brazil, and Argentina)
  • Foliage: Fine, feathery, pinnate leaves with a strong, resinous scent
  • Growth rate: Fast

Conditions:

  • Soil: Prefers well-drained soils; tolerates sandy, rocky, and nutrient-poor soils
  • Light: Full sun
  • Water: Low; highly drought-tolerant once established
  • Climate: Thrives in arid, semi-arid, and Mediterranean regions

Additional Features:

  • Flowers and Berries: Small, yellowish-white flowers in clusters, followed by pinkish-red, pepper-like berries used for ornamental purposes and sometimes as a spice substitute
  • Uses: Ideal for shade, windbreaks, erosion control, and as an ornamental tree
  • Spacing: Plant 8–10 meters apart for standalone growth or dense plantings
  • Low Maintenance: Minimal pruning required; prune to shape and remove dead wood
  • Pest Resistance: Resilient to pests and diseases
  • Drought Tolerance: Performs well in dry, low-water conditions
  • Environmental Concerns: Can be invasive in some regions, such as Australia and parts of the United States; check local guidelines before planting

The Peruvian Pepper Tree is a beautiful and hardy option for arid landscapes, providing shade, texture, and vibrant berries while requiring minimal care. However, its potential invasiveness should be carefully managed in sensitive ecosystems.
