Moving a mature palm from a nursery in Queensland or Thailand to a hotel forecourt in Dubai is not a freight problem. It is a horticultural project with a freight step in the middle. Start with the specification, not the ship
Every successful palm export begins with a precise plant schedule. The single most important measurement is clear trunk height: the distance from the base of the trunk to the base of the first frond. Two suppliers can quote "6 metre palms" and deliver visibly different trees if one measures to the tip of the canopy and the other to the first frond. Landmark projects specify clear trunk height because it is objective, checkable on arrival, and directly linked to the visual effect the landscape architect designed.

Warm origins matter for more than availability: transplanting and root preparation succeed best when root growth is active, and year-round warmth means year-round transplant windows.
Transplanting: managing water loss above all
The critical risk in lifting any palm is transpiration loss. A freshly dug palm keeps losing water through its fronds while its roots have temporarily lost the capacity to replace it. The method that protects the palm is straightforward but must be executed correctly:
- Reduce the canopy by one half to two thirds at digging, depending on species, to cut water demand immediately.
- For sensitive species such as Sabal palmetto, remove almost all fronds and tie the remaining ones up around the apical bud to protect the palm's single growing point.
- Apply anti-transpirant treatments and keep root balls moist from the moment of lifting.
A palm has one growing point. Protect the bud and you protect the tree; damage it and no amount of aftercare will recover it. This is why experienced crews and correct slinging technique matter as much as any certificate.
The phytosanitary step: soil out, media in
Most importing countries, including the UAE, will not accept plants in native field soil. Before export, each palm is moved into a controlled holding area where the original soil is washed off and replaced with a sterile soil-less media. This is what makes a phytosanitary certificate possible: the importing inspector needs confidence that no soil-borne pests or pathogens are travelling with the tree.
The holding period doubles as a recovery window. Palms re-establish feeder roots in the clean media, which means they arrive at the destination already regrowing rather than freshly shocked.
Shipping and arrival
Ocean freight is hard on living plants: darkness, temperature swings and weeks in a container. Preparation determines survival. Fronds are secured, root balls are wrapped to hold moisture, and container choice and stowage are planned around the voyage duration. On arrival, the first days set the establishment trajectory, so our method statements always include post-entry care advice for the receiving team: shade management, irrigation frequency and staged canopy release.

If you are procuring palms for a project in the Gulf, three questions will tell you quickly whether a supplier knows this work: How do you measure trunk height?
