Two palms of the same species, both honestly described as "6 metres", can arrive looking like different trees. The difference is measurement convention, and on palm-heavy projects it is one of the most common sources of dispute, cost variance and disappointed clients. The fix is a tightly written specification, and it starts with three words: clear trunk height.
Clear trunk height: the measurement that matters
Clear trunk height is measured from the base of the trunk to the base of the first frond. Not to the top of the canopy, not to the frond tips, not "overall height". The visual weight of a palm avenue comes from its trunks; canopy adds a variable metre or two that changes with season, pruning and transport preparation. Specifying overall height invites suppliers to quote smaller trunks wearing taller fronds. Specifying clear trunk height makes every quote comparable and every delivery checkable with a tape measure.
The rest of a specification that holds up
- Trunk calliper and character: diameter at a stated height, and where it matters, notes on ring pattern, straightness or intentional curve for feature palms.
- Frond count on arrival: export preparation legitimately reduces canopy; the specification should state the minimum healthy frond count expected at delivery and the expected regrowth position.
- Root ball dimensions: tied to trunk size by rule of thumb but stated explicitly, because the ball is what survival rides on.
- Health markers: a firm apical bud, no visible bud damage, and freedom from the pests and diseases of concern for the destination country.
- Uniformity tolerance: for avenues and groves, a stated height range across the batch (for example, plus or minus 300mm) so the set reads as intentional rather than assorted.
Why loose specifications cost real money
Palm procurement disputes almost never involve bad faith. They involve two parties measuring different things. The cost lands in three places: replacement freight for rejected stock, programme delay while replacements are found, and the quiet aesthetic tax of an avenue that never quite lines up. All three are prevented by one page of properly written specification, agreed before quotation.
A practical checklist for buyers
Before requesting palm quotes, confirm your document states: clear trunk height per palm type, calliper, root ball size, frond count at delivery, health criteria, batch uniformity tolerance, and the measurement convention itself written out in words. Then ask each supplier to confirm the convention back to you. The suppliers who answer precisely are the ones who have delivered to projects where it mattered.
