Weight decides everything first

Before a single species is discussed, the structural allowance per square metre sets the rules. Saturated growing media is heavy, and every kilogram allocated to soil depth is a kilogram not available for larger plants. Successful rooftop projects are designed backwards from the load limit: lightweight engineered media, then root volume, then the plant list. Water: too much and too little, same roof

This is why rooftop palettes lean on species with genuine drought mechanisms rather than plants that merely survive dry spells: strappy monocots, succulent groundcovers, hard-leaved coastal shrubs and compact trees with proven wind firmness.

Wind is a maintenance issue, not just a design issue

Typhoon-zone roofs teach a blunt lesson: anything tall enough to catch wind must be anchored, and anything not anchored must be low. Practical rules our team applies:

  • Keep canopy volume modest near roof edges and concentrate height in sheltered zones.
  • Use root anchoring and subsurface guying for any tree-scale planting.
  • Choose species that regrow cleanly after wind damage rather than splitting.
  • Plan access for post-storm cleanup as part of the design, not as an afterthought.
