Preparation starts seasons before the crane arrives
A well-managed ex-ground tree is root-pruned in stages before its final lift. Progressive pruning inside the intended root ball diameter forces the tree to build a dense network of fine feeder roots close to the trunk. When lifting day comes, the tree travels with the roots that actually feed it, not just a ball of soil. Trees lifted cold, without staged preparation, carry a root system optimised for open ground and pay for it in establishment.
The lift: slings, not shortcuts
The photographs in our field manuals repeat one instruction so often it has become a mantra: the sling must be crossed under the base of the root ball in an X pattern. Lifting from the trunk tears roots and bark; lifting from a properly crossed sling under the ball carries the tree's weight through the soil mass. The root ball is wrapped to hold moisture and integrity, the canopy is tied to prevent limb damage, and the tree moves from ground to truck in one controlled movement.
Size is a logistics fact, not just a horticultural one
Advanced trees are transported on their sides, craned over obstacles and manoeuvred through gates designed for vehicles, not canopies. Every serious ex-ground supply job is planned backwards from the destination: access widths, crane reach, overhead services and the final planting pit. A perfect tree that cannot reach its hole is a very expensive lesson in site survey.
Establishment: the first two years decide the next fifty
- Water by root ball, not by area: a transplanted tree drinks from its ball until new roots venture out. Irrigation must target that zone precisely.
- Stake and guy for movement, not immobility: slight flex builds anchoring roots; rigid fixing builds dependence.
- Resist the urge to feed heavily: new roots follow water and oxygen, not fertiliser concentration.
- Release canopy staging gradually: if fronds or limbs were reduced or tied for transport, the canopy is restored on a schedule, not all at once.
When ex-ground stock is the right call
Instant maturity is worth paying for when the landscape is the product: hotel arrivals, resort spines, civic frontages, destination retail. It is often better value than it appears, because one advanced tree can replace years of maintenance on a juvenile tree plus the commercial cost of a landscape that looks unfinished.
