Succulents give form and colour on almost no water, which makes them the natural ground and mid layer for arid schemes and a mainstay of interior planting. Euphorbia and Agave carry the sculptural end, with Kalanchoe, Crassula, Senecio, Gasteria and Aloe for texture and Suaeda and Sesuvium for genuinely saline coastal ground.
Succulents fail from drainage rather than from drought: on the reclaimed and compacted ground common on Gulf projects, standing water in the root zone will kill a planting that would survive years without irrigation.
