The shrub layer does more habitat work than the canopy, because it provides nesting cover and food at the height most small birds and pollinators use. Callistemon and Leptospermum are the strongest nectar sources, Syzygium and Carissa the fruiting species, and Acacia, Lavandula, Artemisia, Melaleuca and Combretum molle add seed, shelter and pollinator forage.
Habitat shrub planting needs to be dense and continuous rather than spaced as specimens, because scattered plants provide food without cover and put birds at risk. Plant it as thicket.
