Humid and frost free planting is where palms are at their easiest and where the range widens furthest. Dypsis and Livistona carry the volume, with Archontophoenix, Areca, Chamaedorea, Copernicia, Washingtonia, Rhapis excelsa, Veitchia merrillii and Pseudophoenix sargentii covering everything from canopy to understorey.
Clumping species behave very differently from single stemmed ones in a confined bed, spreading sideways rather than upward, so decide which habit the position needs before choosing a genus. For arid schemes the equivalent list is low water palms for drought areas, and palms for tropical climates narrows to the genuinely humid end.
