Maple Trees
The Acer range, led by Acer palmatum in its named forms: 'Sango Kaku' for coral winter bark, dissectum 'Inaba Shidare' for the weeping cut leaf habit, 'Atropurpureum' and 'Elegans' for foliage colour. Acer rubrum 'Redpointe' and 'Fairview Flame' provide the larger, faster growing red maples.
Maples need genuine winter chill, shelter from hot wind and protection from afternoon sun, which puts them outside most Gulf ground and firmly inside courtyard, interior and cool climate work. Do not specify them on exposed sites. For deciduous species that suit warm climates see deciduous trees, and for sheltered courtyard planting, slow growing ornamental trees.
