Two very different plants share this name. The evergreen Magnolia grandiflora selections, 'Teddy Bear', 'Sweet N Neat', 'Alta' and 'Bull Bay', give dense year round structure and large summer flowers; the deciduous group, Magnolia stellata, Magnolia soulangeana and Magnolia denudata 'Yulan', flowers on bare wood in early spring.
The compact grandiflora selections are the ones to specify near buildings, because the species form becomes a very large tree and is regularly planted where it cannot stay.
