Four species, one genus, and the most recognisable planting in the Gulf. Phoenix dactylifera is the true date palm and the avenue and heritage specification, Phoenix canariensis the heavier crowned Canary Island form, Phoenix reclinata the multi stemmed clumping habit, and Phoenix roebelenii the small pygmy form for beds and containers.
The four are not interchangeable and are frequently confused on schedules: they differ in mature height, trunk character, crown weight and cost by a wide margin. Name the species, not just the genus.
