About this collection
Ferns
Ferns hold the deepest shade positions where flowering plants will not perform, indoors and under dense canopy. The range covers the ground ferns, Nephrolepis, Pteris, Blechnum, Diplazium and Arachniodes, the epiphytes Platycerium and Drynaria for walls and trunks, and Cyathea tree ferns where vertical structure is wanted.
Humidity, not light, is the limiting factor for most ferns, and an air conditioned lobby is drier than a desert at plant level, so an interior fern scheme needs either a humidified zone or species selected for it. Platycerium and Nephrolepis are the tolerant ones. See indoor plants for interior landscaping for the wider interior range and ground cover plants for shaded ground layer alternatives.
