Citrus does three jobs at once in a warm climate scheme: evergreen glossy structure, heavy scent at flowering, and fruit. The range covers the bitter and ornamental species, Citrus aurantium, Citrus mitis, Citrus medica and Citrus japonica, alongside the productive types including Citrus maxima and the lemon and orange selections.
Citrus is intolerant of saline irrigation and of waterlogging, and it shows both as leaf yellowing long before it dies, which makes it a useful indicator plant as well as a specification risk on reclaimed ground.
