Xanthorrhoea australis - Grass Tree

Procurement note

Availability is confirmed by project review.

Description

The Xanthorrhoea australis, commonly known as the Grass Tree, is an iconic and slow-growing evergreen plant native to Australia. It is distinguished by its tufted, grass-like foliage, which forms dense crowns atop a thick, blackened trunk, often resulting from natural fire exposure. Mature plants can develop a tall flower spike covered with small, fragrant cream-colored blossoms, which attract birds and insects. Growing up to 4 meters in height (including the flower spike), this hardy species is well-suited to arid and temperate landscapes.

Grass Trees are revered for their unique appearance, resilience, and cultural significance to Indigenous Australians.

  • Native to: Australia
  • Foliage: Long, narrow, grass-like green leaves forming a dense tuft; evergreen

  • Cultural Significance: Valued by Indigenous Australians for its resin, edible roots, and flower spikes
  • Fire Adaptation: Regenerates after fire; blackened trunk is a natural feature of older plants

The Grass Tree is a unique and striking plant, perfect for adding architectural interest to native gardens, arid landscapes, and sustainable designs. Its slow growth and longevity make it a timeless addition to Australian-inspired gardens.
