About this collection

Australian Native Shrubs

The Australian shrub range is unusually well suited to Gulf and Mediterranean conditions because it evolved on poor, free draining, low phosphorus soils. Callistemon and Syzygium lead it, with Leptospermum, Melaleuca, Acacia, Westringia, Grevillea, Banksia, Acmena and Austromyrtus completing the palette.

Most of this group resents phosphorus and will decline in beds treated with standard general purpose fertiliser, which is a maintenance instruction rather than a planting one and is regularly missed. Write it into the specification. See Australian native trees for the canopy layer and bird attracting native plants for the habitat selection.
