Some trees are specified as geometry rather than as planting. Dracaena and Araucaria give the strongest vertical statements, Acacia tortilis and Colvillea racemosa the flat and layered crowns, and Cedrus libani, Ceiba speciosa, Bombax, Yucca gigantea and Euphorbia balsamifera the heavier sculptural forms.
Architectural trees have to be placed against a surface that reads them, which usually means a plain wall, water or open sky. Set into mixed planting they disappear and the money is wasted.
