Species overview
Agave sisalana, known as the Sisal Agave, is the fibre agave of the dry tropics, grown for centuries in plantations and now valued as much for its architecture as its rope. Rigid blue-green blades radiate from a tight basal rosette, each ending in a hard terminal spine, and after many years the plant throws a flowering mast several metres tall before dying and leaving offsets behind.
In landscape work it earns its place in gravel gardens, arid medians and hot exposed frontages where irrigation is minimal and a strong sculptural line is wanted.
