Sandy coastal ground drains faster than any planting schedule assumes, and it holds almost no nutrition, so the species that succeed are those adapted to both. Pinus thunbergii, Pandanus, Waterhousia, Flindersia, Leptospermum, Hyophorbe, Pittosporum tobira and Plumeria all establish reliably in it.
On sand the establishment method matters more than the species: irrigation has to be frequent and light rather than deep and occasional, and organic amendment moves through the profile quickly.
