A screen has to be dense from the ground up, hold that density under clipping, and not thin out in the third year. Podocarpus, Waterhousia floribunda and its selections, Syzygium and Elaeocarpus do that reliably, with Tristaniopsis and Hymenosporum where a lighter, more informal line is acceptable.
Screening is a spacing problem before it is a species problem: most disappointing screens were planted correctly and simply too far apart. Fix centres against the mature width, not the supply width.
