About this collection
Salt Tolerant Trees
Salt reaches planting two ways, as airborne spray on the crown and as salinity in the root zone, and few species take both. Conocarpus erectus, Coccoloba uvifera, Tamarix aphylla and Pandanus odoratissimus handle the hardest exposure, with Cordia sebestena, Pittosporum tobira, Metrosideros excelsa and Pinus thunbergii for the sheltered second line.
On reclaimed ground the limiting factor is usually irrigation water quality rather than sea spray, so ask for the salinity figure before the palette is fixed. Salt tolerant trees for coastal areas and oceanfront properties split this by exposure, and the Middle East coastal palette is the assembled Gulf list.
