About this collection
Low Maintenance Palms
Palm maintenance is almost entirely frond removal, and the species that need least are the self cleaning ones that drop spent fronds without help. Archontophoenix, Veitchia merrillii, Dypsis and Chamaedorea are the cleanest, with Hyphaene thebaica, Beaucarnea gracilis, Thrinax radiata, Sabal, Acoelorrhaphe and Phoenix roebelenii adding slow growing options.
Self cleaning palms drop heavy fronds without warning, which is a safety consideration over paths and parking even though it reduces the maintenance bill. Height of access is the other factor: a palm that outgrows a standard platform becomes expensive whatever its habit. See export ready palms for the full range and low maintenance trees for the broadleaf equivalent.
