The bold foliage layer that gives a tropical scheme its scale between shrubs and canopy. Heliconia and Alpinia lead it, with Musa for the largest leaves, Alcantarea and Ananas for rosette form, and Costus, Cheilocostus, Etlingera, Canna and Hedychium coronarium adding flower and scent.
Everything in this group is wind sensitive: leaves shred in exposure and the plant looks damaged for the rest of the season, so it belongs in courtyards, atria and sheltered pockets rather than open ground.
