About this collection
Bamboo
Bamboo gives height, movement and a dense screen faster than any woody species, and the range here is restricted to Bambusa and Dendrocalamus so that clump forming behaviour is the default. Bambusa textilis 'Gracilis' is the standard narrow screen, Bambusa lako and Bambusa chungii the coloured culm forms, and the Bambusa heterostachya selections the lower, denser options.
The only question that matters with bamboo is running versus clumping, and it is the one most often left unasked. Clumping species expand slowly from a centre and can be managed; running species will cross a boundary and become someone else's problem. Confirm the habit in writing. For woody alternatives at the same scale see screening and privacy trees and hedging and screening.
