Archive record · Innovation file · 2020s · Queensland, Australia
The newest material in this archive is not a catalogue or a contract; it is sensor data. This record documents the team's collaboration with the agricultural technology arm of a global engineering company, instrumenting trees with dendrometers and sap flow sensors to read, in real time, what a tree is actually doing.
The experiment
On commercial avocado trees in the Bundaberg growing region, the collaboration fitted two families of instrument. Dendrometers measure micro-changes in trunk diameter: trees swell and shrink daily as water moves through them, and the pattern of that pulse reveals hydration status days before foliage shows stress. Sap flow sensors measure the actual volume of water moving through the trunk, effectively metering the tree's consumption hour by hour.
What the data changes
- Irrigation by evidence: instead of watering by schedule or by soil probe, growers water when the trees themselves signal demand, saving water and preventing the silent stress that costs yield and condition.
- Transplant monitoring: for the team's core business, the implications run straight to relocation work. A newly transplanted advanced tree's sap flow tells you whether establishment is succeeding weeks before any visible symptom, when intervention can still change the outcome.
- Case-study discipline: the collaboration produced documented case studies of plant response, adding instrumented evidence to a knowledge base built over decades of field observation.
Why this record matters
This archive is full of judgement earned the slow way: field guides, tolerance catalogues, method statements refined over thousands of trees. Sensor instrumentation does not replace that judgement; it sharpens it, and the willingness to put hardware on trees with a global technology partner shows the same instinct that built the archive in the first place: turn practice into knowledge, and knowledge into method. Where the 1990s teams annotated photographs by hand, today's teams read telemetry. The habit is identical.
