In May 2009, at the height of the Gulf's first great landscaping boom, our team's Australian directors registered a joint venture in Abu Dhabi with partners including Dubai's Nakheel, the developer behind Palm Jumeirah. Its purpose: give governments, developers, contractors and landscape architects in the GCC a total landscape package, from procurement and production of trees, palms, shrubs, groundcovers and turf through to installation and maintenance. This record rebuilds the prequalification capability statement that venture presented across the Gulf.
What the statement laid out
- International nursery infrastructure: operating facilities in Australia, China and Thailand, with a new production nursery planned for the UAE, backed by documented stock inventory systems, delivery timelines and quality control regimes.
- A proven nursery-building record: in 1997 the team joint-ventured with Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation in the Philippines to establish a 35 hectare production nursery for the Global City development in Manila. That facility became the first nursery in the Philippines to achieve ISO 9002 quality assurance certification.
- Twenty years of landmark delivery: the directors' project history spanned integrated parks and resorts, commercial and residential developments, sports fields, government works and botanic gardens across Hong Kong, China and Macau.
- A client list that testified for itself: Disneyland Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and royal families in Bahrain, Brunei and Japan.
- Regional botanical intelligence: dedicated sections on indigenous species of GCC countries and acclimatisation facilities, recognising that Gulf projects succeed on species choice and preparation, not just supply.
Why this record matters
Capability statements are usually promises. This one was a summary of receipts: an ISO-certified nursery built from bare ground in the Philippines a decade earlier, operating facilities on three countries' soil, and reference clients at the most demanding end of world horticulture. It anchors the middle chapter of our team's Gulf story, between the Asian resort decades and today's giga-project supply programmes in Saudi Arabia.
The thread to today
The playbook in this 2009 document, source internationally, acclimatise locally, build the nursery before the project needs it, is exactly the model now serving Red Sea coast developments.
