Euphorbia lactea
Mottled Spurge
The Euphorbia lactea, or Mottled Spurge, looks like a cactus and is not one: it is a leafless succulent spurge whose four-angled green stems are marbled with white along the ridges and armed with paired spines. It branches into a candelabra at 2 to 5 metres.
It is used as a sculptural accent in gravel and xeriscape schemes, and its spines make it an effective security planting along boundaries.
