A dense, dark-crowned forest tree of the Asian monsoon belt, Carallia brachiata is grown for its glossy evergreen canopy and its willingness to hold shape without constant pruning. In cultivation it settles at 10 to 20 metres with a rounded crown 6 to 10 metres across.
It is planted as an avenue and shade tree in humid climates and clips readily into tall screens where a solid green wall is wanted year round.
